Physics Wallah: India’s 101st unicorn with $100 million funding

8-year-old edtech company Physics Wallah (PW) has entered the unicorn club becoming India’s 101st unicorn with a valuation of $1 billion after Byju’s, Unacademy, Vedantu, and UpGrad.

Physics Wallah is a bootstrapped online education startup Founded in 2016 by Alakh Pandey and Prateek Maheshwar to prepare students for engineering and medical entrance examinations.

Physics Wallah provides affordable and comprehensive learning experience to students of classes 6 -12 and those preparing for JEE and NEET exams.
PhysicsWallah is gearing up to launch courses in 9 different languages—Bengali, Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Tamil and Telugu as part of its growth strategy. PhysicsWallah clocked a profit of almost Rs 7 crore in the very first year of its operations.

Alakh Pandey, the 30-year old Engineering dropout, co-founder and CEO of PhysicsWallah founded the company two years ago as a YouTube Channel.

Alakh was born and brought up in Allahabad (Prayagraj), UP, started taking tuitions when he was in Class 9 and started teaching at coaching institutes when he was in Class 11. He Topped his school in Class 10 and 12th but failed to crack IIT. Later Joined Harcourt Butler Technical University,Kanpur but dropped out in the third year.

Pandey Started PhysicsWallah YouTube channel In 2016, rolled out app in 2020 and opened 20 offline centres called PW Pathshala across 18 cities of India, including Delhi, Noida, Patna, Lucknow, Kolkata, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Jaipur, Pune, Ranchi, Bhopal, Varanasi, Dhanbad in September 2021.
